HOW TO DECIDE WHAT TO
KEEP VS. TOSS BEFORE A MOVE

One of the hardest parts of moving is figuring out what's worth bringing. A simple decision framework that'll save you time, money, and truck space.

← Back to Blog

Every move is also a reckoning. Boxes get opened for the first time in years. Stuff you forgot you owned suddenly reappears. And at some point you're standing in the garage at 10pm holding a broken blender asking yourself: "Do I really need this?"

The answer is usually no. Here's a practical framework for making the keep-vs-toss decision quickly, room by room, without the guilt spiral.

The Core Question

Before anything else, ask yourself one honest question about every item:

"Have I used this in the last 12 months — and will I realistically use it in the next 12?"

If the answer to both halves is no, it goes. This single filter eliminates about 40% of the decision-making upfront. Everything else gets sorted below.

The Four Categories

Don't use two boxes (Keep / Toss). Use four:

  1. Keep — Used regularly, has a place in the new home, and you'd buy it again if you lost it.
  2. Donate — Still good, just not for you. Goodwill, local shelters, Facebook Marketplace, or Buy Nothing groups.
  3. Sell — Worth actual money. Set aside to photograph and list before the move.
  4. Trash / Haul Away — Broken, outdated, unsafe, or just genuinely useless.

The "Sell" category is worth the effort on big-ticket items — furniture, appliances, exercise equipment — but don't let it slow you down on small stuff. Your time has value too.

Room-by-Room Priorities

Kitchen

Kitchens are clutter magnets. Go hard here. Toss anything with a missing lid, a broken handle, or a duplicate purpose. You do not need three spatulas. Gadgets that only do one thing and haven't been used in a year — gone. Rule of thumb: if it doesn't fit in your new kitchen's cabinets, it doesn't come.

Clothes & Closets

Turn all your hangers backwards. After six months, anything still backwards gets donated. For the move, be ruthless: if it doesn't fit right now, donate it. Moving is not a good time for optimism about future sizes.

Garage & Storage

This is where moves go to get expensive. Every unnecessary item in the garage adds weight, space, and time. Old paint cans, broken tools, seasonal decorations you've skipped for three years — these are prime candidates for removal. If you're not sure, ask: would you buy this again at a garage sale for $5? If not, it goes.

Furniture

Measure your new space before you commit to taking large pieces. Furniture that worked in a big Atlanta house may overwhelm a smaller apartment in Midtown. Better to sell it before the move than haul it across town and find out it doesn't fit.

Sentimental Items

These are the hardest. Sentimental value is real. Give yourself permission to keep meaningful things — but be honest about the difference between "meaningful" and "just familiar." Photos can be digitized. Keepsakes can be condensed into one box per person, not one room per person.

What to Do With What You're Getting Rid Of

  • Donate: Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStores (great for furniture and building materials)
  • Sell: Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp — furniture and appliances move fast in Atlanta
  • Haul Away: For anything that's broken, bulky, or just too much to deal with — call a junk removal service. Jacey's Moving handles full estate cleanouts, garage purges, and single-item hauls throughout Atlanta and North Georgia.

"A professional junk removal team can clear out an entire garage in 2–3 hours. For most Atlanta homeowners, that's worth more than the cost."

The Bottom Line

Moving costs are calculated largely by weight and volume. Every item you don't bring is money back in your pocket — and less to unpack on the other end. Be decisive. You can always buy a replacement if you genuinely miss something. You can't buy back the time and money spent moving things you didn't need.
